Loneliness


Man alone on beach - justopenthebook.com Few emotions are as devastating as loneliness. The feeling of being all alone, of having no one with whom to share your thoughts and life, can create pain, bitterness, and hopelessness.

Recent studies estimate that approximately 20% of the American population, or 60 million people, feel lonely.

Chronic loneliness can have serious consequences.  

Studies have linked loneliness to increased instances of cancer, heart disease, and stroke.  Suicide is often a direct result of chronic loneliness.  Alcoholism, drug use, increased promiscuity, and destructive or anti-social behavior often are rooted in loneliness.

God loves each and every person.  More than anything else, God desires an intimate relationship with every person.  God Himself can fill all emptiness we feel.  He will always be with you.

“For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord” (Romans 14:7-8)

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”  (Deuteronomy 31:8)

“By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life” (Psalm 42:8)

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20)

People try lots of methods to overcome loneliness.  Interaction on the internet, social clubs, gyms, dating, working more, volunteering are all ways some try to feel less lonely.  But even within these arenas, many people still feel lonely.

Only God can provide relief from our troubles.  In the Bible, God shows the compassion He has for the lonely.

“My eyes are ever on the LORD, for only he will release my feet from the snare. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish.” (Psalm 25:15-17)

“He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy” (Job 8:21)

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

“Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again” (Psalm 71:20)

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4)

Many times, it is the lack of good relationships with other people that seems to be the source of our loneliness.  God is the one who provides the other people we need in our life.  This can be spouses, families, children, and friends.

Believers in Christ will often find meaningful relationships with other believers as they continue to fellowship with their church family.

“God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land”  (Psalm 68:6)

“The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

“Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD” (Proverbs 19:14)

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” (Acts 2:46-47)

No matter what troubles you have faced, no matter how isolated you may feel, God knows you and God loves you.  God’s love is the most powerful force in the universe.  You can never be so lost that God cannot find and redeem you.

Turn to God and ask Him to restore you.  He will be with you.

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.” (James 4:8)

“No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” (John 16:27)

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:17-18)

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love.  Death can’t, and life can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away.” (Romans 8:38, NLT)

“The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 118:6)

“For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love” (Lamentations 3:31-32)

Rejoice in the love God has for you!  He will never leave you nor forsake you!
