Matthew West:
God ultimately is the one who decides our fate. He may bring life or death. He may bring health or illness.
“See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.” (Deuteronomy 32:39
“For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal” (Job 5:18)
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-3 emphasis added)
While it is God who ultimately decides our fate, the Bible contains many examples of those whose trust in God was rewarded. God is always looking for people to turn to Him and His ways. The Bible records many instances of those who were healed by prayer, faith in God’s healing power, and by repenting from their sins.
“If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26)
“Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the LORD. I will add fifteen years to your life.” (2 Kings 20:5-6)
“She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.” (Matthew 9:21-22)
“Intercede with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.” (1 Kings 13:6)
“Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits- who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases” (Psalm 103:2-3)
God shows in the Bible that He honors faith in His power and belief in His Son, Jesus Christ. In fact, the Gospels show us numerous examples of Jesus performing miraculous healing for those who truly believed in his power.
“When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you” (Matthew 9:28-29)
“Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed’.” (Luke 8:50)
“By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.” (Acts 3:16)
It is important to remember that God’s will ultimately prevails. Sometimes, even our faith does not produce healing here on earth. But God still honors faith, and our ultimate healing in heaven is assured as we believe in Jesus.
“These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.” (Hebrews 11:39-40)
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Corinthians 4:16-17)
“The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.” (2 Timothy 4:18)
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away’.” (Revelation 21:1-4, emphasis added)
As one faces times of trials where healing is needed, God asks us to place our faith and trust in Him. Pray to Him, and accept His sovereign will. God asks us to hope in Him, knowing that He is filled with unfailing love for us.
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” (Romans 12:12)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
“I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul.” (Psalm 31:7)
