This week, my wife and I celebrated the 8 year anniversary of the day that we met. For us, this anniversary means more than our wedding anniversary. I can still remember the first time I looked at Kristy, our first conversation, the feeling we had just spending time together – we fell in love. It was literally a love at first sight.
And though the life we’ve led together since then has been filled with trials, God has carried us through them all and we continue to grow deeper in love each day.
In many ways, that first meeting was really the beginning of the life journey that God had planned for me. From the beginning of our life together, God has used our love to not only to bring us closer to each other, but to draw us both closer to Him.
As I look back on our life together, meeting my wife as the stone that cast the ripples of God’s plan for me. From that beginning, I first discovered Christianity and went to a church service that changed my life. I met Jesus, and found in him the satisfaction for which my soul had always been longing. My experience growing in Christ helped me to clean my life from habits and choices that were causing me and those around me a lot of harm.
From that beginning, I discovered what real love is like. God has loved me and forgiven me in such a way that I hardly have words for it. Kristy has modeled that same love and forgiveness time and time again. The love she and I share is indescribable. The honor and joy of being her husband is a gift and pleasure that I do not deserve.
From that beginning, my heart awoke to a love of children that had been buried deep. Before meeting Kristy, I had really no interaction with kids. But as we were together, I was blessed with the best daughter anyone could ask for. My wife ran a home day care for several years, and my love of being with and relating to kids was opened as I played and helped with our day care kids. Not long after, God blessed us with another daughter, two sons, and a new baby girl due within the next four weeks. The joy of being a father is one of the cornerstones of my life.
From that beginning, God grew in me a love for His word and the calling He has for my life. I remember the excitement Kristy and I shared as we discussed the messages from each Sunday service when we were first attending church. The energy and enthusiasm we shared was amazing as we learned how real God is and the fantastic love he has for all people. I found a love for serving as we led small groups and served during the offering at Sunday services.
From that beginning, God laid out new career paths for me. Kristy encouraged and supported me when I began a career as a financial advisor. The relationships I developed with the clients I served are precious to me. I had the privilege to know and to serve many great people, and had the honor of partnering with them to help plan some of the most important decisions in their lives.
From that beginning, this ministry began. Kristy and I dedicated to prayer and followed as God led us to share His word with the world. Kristy came up with our site’s name and concept. Her encouragement, ideas, diligence, creativity and spark all led our mission to grow to what it is today. My ability to write, a gift from God, would never have developed without Kristy’s help. The look, the feel and the heart of this ministry all have their foundation in the work God has done in her heart.
From that beginning, God has cleansed us, grown us, blessed us, and helped us. We were both lost in a life without real purpose. But through God’s amazing grace, what started as a chance meeting has blossomed into a life full of love for God and for others. Each day, we praise God for every good thing we have. Each day, we look at the children we have the honor of raising, the joy that they bring, and we are humbled. Each day, we realize the miracle of where God has taken us.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:8-10)
There is no way I could have imagined all that would come from that first “hello” 8 years ago. It is truly the grace of God that has led us from the beginning.
