Choose What Is Better This Christmas

This past week God had me pondering so much involving the upcoming celebration of Christ’s birth.  I know many of you know the story of Mary and Martha.  And I know many of us (yes, me included) think of the “busyness” that Martha was under while Mary spent time with Jesus.

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.

She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42)

One thing that really stood out to me this week was a part so often over looked: Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made!  How many of you are distracted by all the preparations that have to be made this week?

And what was Jesus’ reply?  “few things are needed – or indeed only one.”  ONLY ONE THING IS NEEDED!

Jesus continues on to say “Mary has chosen what is better” – what is better is spending time with Jesus, our Lord and Savior!

It is so easy to get wrapped up (no pun intended) in all the busyness and the preparations that we so often think we must complete.  But I want to remind you, especially as we near the birth of Jesus, that only one thing is needed – to spend time with Him!

Merry Christmas!!! May you enjoy this wonderful celebration of Christ’s birth as you spend time with Him.
