It is so interesting that as we turn our prayers to God, He often responds by changing the direction in which we are looking. Lately, I have been pursuing God with requests for direction. I’ve wanted direction for my work, for our family dynamic, for our location, for how to be a better person. But as I’ve asked God for these directions, He has turned my eyes back on Him.
Through prayer and Bible study, more and more God is showing me that I need to focus on who He is, not on the specific answers I am seeking. God is working in my mind and heart to deepen our relationship, to turn me to a greater understanding of how great God is and how much love and power He has for me. He is helping me to see that the answers I seek will only come as I grow to praise and trust in His character.
The Scripture God has pointed me to lay out some amazing promises for the believer as we come to understand who God really is and the way He wants to relate to us.
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:18-19)
“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:22-24)
God is showing me that He has the power to give all the direction and peace that I seek. In fact, the power God has to act is unbelievable. But first, I need to be deep in my reverence and dependence on Him, in my love and appreciation for God. But God’s promises are amazing, and true peace is found in knowing who God is.
